Women’s roles in the 19th century were quite different than today. Instead of being bound by traditional vocations, Sarah Cockrell demonstrated great business acumen in taking over the family businesses after her husband’s death. She not only maintained the business but began new ventures. Sarah modeled successful entrepreneurship throughout her life.
